Virat Kohli Test captaincy : Virat Kohli steps down as Test captain after series defeat against South Africa | Cricket News

Virat Kohli, Team India’s Test captain, stepped down a day after the series loss to South Africa. Under his leadership, India remained one of the top teams in the world and became the first Asian team to defeat Australia Down Under.

Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket team’s Test captain, has stepped down following the series loss to South Africa. Kohli made the big announcement on Twitter. In the 2014/15 season, he took over as full-time captain from MS Dhoni. Kohli retires as the most successful Indian Test captain, with 40 victories in 68 matches.

In a social media statement, the former captain thanked the BCCI, former head coach Ravi Shastri, and MS Dhoni. “It has taken 7 years of hard work, toil, and unwavering perseverance to steer the team in the right direction. I did the job completely honestly and didn’t leave anything out. Everything has to come to a halt at some point, and for me as India’s Test Captain, that time has arrived. There have been many ups and downs along the way, but there has never been a lack of effort or belief. I’ve always believed in giving my all in everything I do, and if I can’t, I know it’s not the right thing for me “to do,” Kohli said.

“I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team. I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision I had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation. You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful.”

Under his leadership, India grew into a formidable force, dominating every domestic team. During the 2015/16 season, India defeated Sri Lanka at home before defeating South Africa.

In 2016, India defeated the West Indies and then went on a winning streak in the home season, which included 13 Test matches. During the season, India won all four series. Their lone defeat came in Pune against Australia.

During the 2017/18 season, India won back-to-back series against Sri Lanka. Even though Kohli’s purple patch with the bat continued, 2018 wasn’t a great year for him as captain, as India lost away series against England and South Africa.

Kohli made a strong comeback in 2018/19, becoming the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia. The series victory is still regarded as one of the most illustrious moments in Indian cricket history. India went on a winning streak the following year, defeating the West Indies (2-0), South Africa (3-0), and Bangladesh (2-0).

New Zealand, who won the Test series 2-0 at home, ended their winning streak. After a year, Kohli led India through an entire series and captained the team to a 3-1 victory over England. India maintained their dominance over England away from home as well, returning from the United Kingdom with a 2-1 lead.

Kohli’s most recent Test series as captain was against South Africa, which the visitors lost. Except for South Africa and New Zealand, India has won a series in every country where Kohli has travelled.

Rohit Sharma was recently named Team India’s Test vice-captain and could be promoted to the position of captain. Rohit will become India’s all-format captain if he is appointed. He recently took over as white-ball captain from Kohli.
